By 2270 the Klolode class cruisers which the Romulans had acquired from their Klingon allies were rapidly becoming obsolete. New vessels were urgently required to counter the Federations new Constitution 2 class starships and the advances of the ever increasingly restive Klingon Empire.

Using some Klingon technical assistance, the Romulans designed two new ship classes: a small cruiser designed for scouting and commerce raiding and a large battlecruiser. The Klingons immediately saw the potential of the cruiser and "acquired" an incomplete prototype from the Romulans. The Klingon/Romulan alliance ended before the battlecruiser design was completed but the new cruiser soon went into full production with the Romulan Star Empire. The Romulans named it "D'Ronex".

The D'Ronex would soon see action against the Romulan's erstwhile allies -the Klingons- as well as Star Fleet. They fought well in these encounters but were chiefly employed for the next forty years against an enemy on their coreward borders: "The Husnock". The D'Ronex would spearhead the Romulan's desperate struggle against this invading power. The D'Ronex class was often upgraded with additional deflector plating during that war. The conflict abruptly ended in 2368 when the entire Husnock species suddenly vanished. By that time the D'Ronex class had long since been decomissioned.

The D'Ronex is also noteworthy as the chosen starship of Commander Tharius, one of the most famous -or infamous- of Romulan officers. His defence of Xivir IX against the overwhelming Klingon taskforce is universally studied for its military tactics. His moto was "Killing barbarians is not ones' duty, it's ones' pleasure"
